Commander Bio

Ding Ruchang (1836–1895) was an admiral of the Qing Dynasty's Beiyang Fleet and one of China's most prominent naval commanders of the late 19th century. He led the Chinese fleet during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), fighting against superior Japanese naval forces in a desperate attempt to maintain Chinese naval dominance. Though ultimately defeated, Ding Ruchang's leadership became a symbol of Chinese naval ambition during the turbulent transition of Asian naval power.
